 MIG 21—THE FLYING WIDOW MAKERS
All of us have seen the Bollywood movie RANG DE BASANTI made by Aamir Khan. He tried to address it in Filmi style.
I shall attempt to address it in a cerebral manner.
I am a ship captain , NOT a fighter aircraft pilot.
Readers may wonder how I am qualified to write about a supersonic fighter aircraft .
All I  can claim is that I can think freely and can shatter the matrix, with 99.9% success rate. It is better that a NON- aero person  comments on this vexing and sensitive issue — as there will be NIL excess baggage and limiting thoughts.  Let some fresh light come in!
— I have carried jet fuel for MIG 21 air crafts on  product tankers  ,
–I have commanded Russian built ships ,
–I have lead Russian crew , engineers and officers- where I was the only Indian ,
–I was in Russia when the Rouble fell from 1:1  per dollar to 1:70 , in 4 hours flat in 1991– when communism drove itself into the ground ,
— I was in Russia when the Rouble fell further to 70000 per USD and the lights were off , market shelves were empty and no salaries were paid, — and the Russian Mafia was born–
–in short I know all there is to know about Russia and their products and methods for over 38 years.
I do hope the powers that be take note of this blog.

I will NOT take sides –this blog is just a statement of fact.

INDIA HAS MANAGED TO CREATE A WORLD RECORD OF 500 MIG 21 AIR CRASHES IN TIMES OF PEACE IN A VERY SHORT TIME.

THIS DUBIOUS RECORD CAN NEVER EVER BE BROKEN .

MIND YOU,  ONLY WE INDIANS,– WHO MASS PRODUCED HEAVIER “ADDED ON HARDWARE”  MIG 21 LIKE AMBASSADOR CARS IN OUR HAL FACTORIES ,  –HAD THIS PROBLEM.

THE REST OF THE WORLD WHICH POSSESSED 13000 MIG 21 VARIANT AIR CRAFTS ,  DID NOT CRASH IN THE SHAMEFUL  WAY WE DID.

INDIA HAD ONLY 900 MIG 21, OUT OF WHICH WE CRASHED 500. WE CAN HARDLY CONGRATULATE OURSELVES

Fingers were soon pointed at poorly trained pilots. They had no idea like the highly trained US pilots how to take in the G force ( can go upto 8 times gravity ) vector of a tail spin, till the plane reached denser lower air , like Chuck Yeager .  

A shock wave forms on the aircraft when it reaches supersonic speeds. From the front of the plane, the shock wave appears as a circle, but from the back and sides, it looks like very sharp spikes coming off the plane. It is a rare and spectacular sight, only visible in humid weather. Usually the planes are up too high when supersonic for a visible vapor wave, and since you can’t fly supersonic around populations, very few people have seen it..

The senior brass consisting of grounded ex- MIG 21 air officers who do NOT have to fly any more and thus risk their thick hides — joined hands with political  powers who locally licence produced substandard MIG 21 in HAL factories , as 60 year antique technology transfer  , —

–and  bought substandard spares (from Kyrgiztan and Uzbegistan at ¼ f the cost to teach Russia a lesson ).  When spares were NOT available IAF cannibalized aircrafts for spares .

None of these break away republics of USSR has any metallurgical expertise like Russia . In India too Metallurgy is a unresearched branch. Russia is No 1 in Metallurgy expertise on this planet. My ships have taken old high grade Siberian rail track beams to USA ( hush hush ) for them to make weapon spares.
The young Indian pilots who were assigned to fly these substandard , ridiculously CHEAP coffins almost went into revolt. It was theirs to do and die no more.

But then most of them had NO dang idea was going on!

Ejecting was always the easy option , with some days off for a concussed spine. A single engine MIG 21 is far heavier than the American and European fighters. Russians used only high notch light weight MIG 21 – in any case they have grounded all of them.

In 1953 the legendary US pilot Capt Charles Chuck Yeager, was the first to experience  INERTIAL ROLL COUPING while flying above the sound barrier at  Mach 2.4.   His aircraft went out of control and tumbled in a inverted spin at 75000 feet. He regained control of his aircraft, like how a champion surfer will anticipate with a cool head and manage— rather than hit the easy panic button and  jump into the water ( eject ) .
MIG 21 was designed as a light interceptor with limited range —NOT a dog fighter or a night fighter or a bad weather fighter .

With every upgrade new stuff was attached , to the original light design. Russians kept the A grade MIG 21 with automatic correction systems for themselves ,

— the low cost grade D came to India in exchange for low quality onions and Nav Bharat Charminar cigarettes , woolen sweaters and Bata shoes ( stuff ONLY for export to Russia which I have discharged in Odessa ). These aircraft would only be given basic operation manuals, so that cutting edge technology of roll stabilization systems  is NOT pirated by Americans.

The yanks at NATO derisively called these HIGH TAIL  planes Fishbeds. ( when the Sicilian Mafia delivered a fish at your door step , you are dead sooner than later )

As the supersonic aircraft gets older they start vibrating. This is why Britain / France  did not wait for even ONE single Concorde to crash , before they decided to ground the planes. A lot of MIG 21 fires can be attributed to hydraulic oil leaks splashing on hot engine, due to machinery misalignment.

The Auto Ignition Temperature of hydraulic oil is less than that of petrol. If you take two identical steel cups of petrol and hydraulic oil and put it on top of a Bunsen burner in the lab—the hydraulic oil will burst into flames first.

Supersonic aircraft, reaches a velocity sufficient to bring about a breakdown in the normal fluid flow of air molecules as they part to make way for the oncoming object. At such speeds, the molecules of air in and immediately around the path of the oncoming body find themselves given insufficient warning to move aside in an orderly manner and are, instead, subjected to violent displacement. compressibility shock, brings major changes to the patterns of airflow pressures, densities, and temperatures that surround the moving body.
Birds were swallowed in by the air intake circular nose tip while taking off— check out  the picture  . At super sonic speed the planes fly very high to avoid sonic boom claims from the general pubic.  A bird hit while taking off at low altitudes cause a smoky flame behind the air craft  , always reported by the onlookers —this does NOT mean the engine was substandard.
At home i have a HONDA portable kerosene generator .  The Kerosene tank always get excessive mud and rust inside.

Now superior Kerosene is indeed Jet Fuel. The Indian Kerosene quality ( mitti ka tel ) is very poor , due to non-existent IOC/ HP / IAF quality control.

I remember when my stainless steel tank ship delivered Jet Fuel to US air force F16 at an island off Portugal, they took the samples to US mainland , before the fuel could be used by the F16 with low micron filters.  Once when our company ship had failed samples,  I was transferred from my ship at Baltimore to Lisbon . I found out that the problem was back dust at shore tank bottom.

Heavier added on weights with every local upgrade meant that the plane requires additional after burner engine thrust to even take off due to weight creep . This plane can reach 19 kilometers high in one minute flat. This causes excessive burnout in a ill maintained engine while taking off.

The retrofitted heavier than designed aircraft with its high deta tail became more sluggish and unwieldy particularly during the landing and take off and in circuit where the aerodynamic control forces decline as a square of the flight velocity but the inertias remain the same.  A heavy MIG 21 needs lots of energy to  execute hard turns. The high Delta tail –hoped to substitute for low flying abiliy, inexperience and proactive resourcefulness of the pilots.

THE INERTIA OF THE HEAVER RETROFITTED FUSELAGE OVERPOWERS THE AERODYNAMIC STABILISING FORCES OF WINGS AND EMPENNAGE.  Inertial coupling occurs when an aircraft such as that described above is quickly put into a roll, resulting in violent pitching and yawing, and loss of control as the aircraft rotates on all three axes. Inertia coupling on an aircraft usually manifests itself as a downward pitching; rolling causes the tail mass to be flung upward and thus the nose to tip down. The pitching can in turn cause gyroscopic yawing.

The Russians are now PISSED OFF  about their high tech pride Sukhov 30 fighters and MIG 29 being crashed too by the squeamish Indian pilots. Probably the pilots chicken out and prefer to eject early — a routine thumb rule or legacy as per MIG 21 flying practise.

Was this a conspiracy to phase off the MIG 21 (which can do 2.1 mach) , and get a swank and easy to operate fleet in peace time ?   Why not work for a BMW / Mercedes fleet of taxis rather than a turkey Ambassador or Fiat without automation , power steering or even a proper hand brake!?

If so they have succeeded for Defence Minister Antony will soon sign a 30 BILLION deal with Russia.

Solution:
Stop this HAL retro thing.  Train our pilots in Russia or USA to be proactive when the aircraft goes out of control .

Have HAL do R&D and take in intelligent young engineers from IIT by paying them high salaries. No country will give expensive military cutting edge technology free in return for low quality onions and Charminar cigarettes.  Buy genuine spares spending money. Only a mindless system which will allow low morale to creep into the air force.

Bottom line:
There are 2 types of ocean high wave surfers , the proud , experienced and well trained ones who keep their balance and can anticipate —the other is the low morale rookie with low surfing hours who will jump off the surfboard when he sees a difficult wave.
It will NOT be out of place to put a poll on all Mif 21 pilots, past and present, if they have ever felt dizzy in mid-air.  Hypoxia-like symptoms can develop with the oxygen system is not maintained properly.
